Year 7 ‘Pure’
Over the past year pupils from year 7 have been taking part in a programme called ‘PURE’. The foundation of the programme is all about a healthier body, mind and soul using a variety of fun and interactive weekly sessions. Based over 5 sessions the pupils have had the opportunity to meet new people, try new things and hopefully learn a bit about how to look after both their bodies and minds.
The programme is broken down as follows:
Week 1: Healthy You
This session included a blindfolded tasting of some healthy but often avoided foods as well as an activity looking at the sugar levels in regularly consumed drinks and how this can impact moods and school days.
Week 2: Healthy Body
This is a circuit training session where participants took part in a variety of quick, easy but useful exercise stations.
Week 3: Healthy Souls i.e. Yogalates/Mindfulness
In this session participants took part in a yogalates workout to help them relax, learn new ways of coping with stress and understand the availability and usefulness of varying meditation and relaxation strategies.
Week 4: Healthy Minds
This session was about raising awareness of familiar celebrities’ struggles in relation to mental health and highlighting different coping strategies. In addition the pupils hopefully gained a greater understanding of what mental health is-both good and poor; and how it is important to understand what can affect their mental health and how to manage this.
Week 5: The Healthier You
This was a cooking session where the students brought together knowledge from the entire programme and planed, prepared and made their own choice of a healthy but enjoyable meal i.e. fake away meal.
Miss Taylor and I have thoroughly enjoyed delivering this programme and feedback from the pupils has been fantastic. All participants have shown their willingness to try something different and have given their all during all sessions.
We believe that the participation within this group will help equip the pupils with the skills to achieve their potential and cope better with all aspects of school and personal life.
Some feedback from the pupils include:
"It helped me become healthier"
"I loved the meditating"
"I learnt how to exercise without equipment"
"My favourite session was the food tasting - I never knew I liked peppers"
