Letter: Building work & reduction in kitchen facilities

April 2018

Dear Parents

As you are probably aware, we have an extensive building project taking place on site this year.  The building work is funded and instructed by the Local Authority in order to create extra space for the increase in student numbers, which came into effect in September 2017.

The building work is going well and the site team from Kier are very considerate and communicative, ensuring that they do their work with minimal disruption.  In addition, they are keen to involve staff and students in aspects of the project which may be of interest.

As well as building a new dining room, there is extensive work being done inside the current building to update and change classrooms.  For example, the two current kitchen/dining rooms will be converted into classrooms and specialist learning spaces.  As a consequence of this internal work, it will be necessary to close various areas of the school for several weeks after May half term.  The disruption will be less of a problem during this time as year 11 and year 13 will be sitting exams and then leaving for the summer break.

Nevertheless, we would like to ask for parents’ support throughout the next phase of the work. During the second half of the summer term, our kitchen facilities will be reduced and then closed completely in main school.  For this period of time, although we will provide food for students to buy at lunchtime, it will be limited to pasta and sandwiches.  The full range of meals, hot and cold, will not be available.  Whilst we will always ensure that students have access to a meal at lunchtime, it may be that some students will want to bring packed lunches to provide some variety to what is available.

I apologise for the inconvenience and thank you in anticipation of your support and patience during the final stages of the building project.  I am sure that it will be well worth it once we have the new dining room, classrooms and library up and running.

In the meantime, please do not hesitate to contact Cathy Bach or myself with any queries about the building work.  In addition, I will ensure that we know exactly when the kitchen closure will commence and inform you as soon as we can.

Many thanks for your support.

Regards

Sam Gorse
